Background
Each year, an increasing number of families in our area have to
make tough decisions about how to spend their earnings. Each
month is a balancing act for them, choosing whether to pay rent,
medical bills, or buy food. These families reside not only in poor
urban areas, but in communities throughout Bergen County.

Among this population are babies who are at risk of going
without proper hygiene and nutritional care. Many come from
low-income, hardworking families. The parents work hard to
provide for their children, but the high cost of formula and diapers
presents an overwhelming challenge.
These facts prompted a group of volunteers at West Side
Presbyterian Church, in Ridgewood, NJ, to create the Baby Basics
program in 1994. In July 2005, the program was adopted by
Children’s Aid and Family Services. Baby Basics is run primarily
by volunteers who dedicate their time, energy, and commitment to
the program. It is supported by local churches, synagogues, schools and
corporate and private donors that contribute funding.
Baby Basics provides free nutritional formula for one year and diapers to
babies of low-income working families from birth through 2 years.
Other infant essentials such as baby wipes, are also offered.
Additionally, counseling, parent education, and other safety-net
services are made available to all clients.

The Purpose

The program also supports nursing mothers who need supplemental formula.
These families are provided a system of support and referrals, as well as onsite
parent education.
Baby Basics supplies are distributed from locations in Englewood and
Ridgewood, New Jersey.
