Giving "Aging Out" Youth a Chance at a Brighter Future With your generous help, our commitment to the children in our care doesn't end when they turn 18, "age out" of foster care and move on to independent living. The agency provides critical assistance to these teens through the Thomas R.S. Burgin Parent's Fund. Although youth in foster care in the State of New Jersey are eligible for subsidized tuition, room and board, they have no other means of financial assistance to fund clothing, toiletries or other living expenses, including rent during school breaks. In addition to providing a monthly stipend for such expenses for each year the teen is a student, the Fund also provides each teen a laptop computer to aid in their studies. The Fund also serves as a source of emergency financial assistance to teenagers who were formerly in foster care with the agency; the awards are tailored to meet the individual needs of the applicants, and include help with car repairs or a loan to cover the deposit for an apartment rental.
This support is vital to their futures; the vast majority of teens have little or no family help and few support services available. Because of their backgrounds of abuse and neglect, the children in our care face huge challenges as they enter adulthood, and it can take very little for their lives to unravel.
You can help our teenagers through this challenging transition to adulthood by making a donation to the Thomas R.S. Burgin Parents Fund today. We're seeking help to cover the cost of college stipends, which are $3,000 apiece; laptop computers, which cost $1,000 for each student and care packages, which contain essentials such as bed linens, towels, luggage sets and storage bins and cost $420 for each recipient.
What's more, because of the generosity of the Redlich Horwitz Foundation, your gift will go even further. The first $20,000 raised will be matched dollar for dollar by a challenge grant from the foundation of $20,000. The college year will be starting soon and we need to help our teens prepare.
