(Ridgewood , NJ) October 5, 2006 - Success in Step-Parenting is a four session series that addresses key issues often confronted by stepfamilies. Sessions are once a month on Tuesdays, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and are led by Dr. Joan Murphy, an expert on stepfamilies. Please note there is no session in December.

  • On October 24, Developing a Blended Family Identity: Negotiating Values, Rituals and Habits will be presented. The workshop provides information and skill-building on uniting a blended family. Topics covered include, how different rituals and habits create challenges and agreeing on a common set of values. How to use the techniques of negotiation and compromise as tools in establishing a healthy blended family will be explored.

  • On November 28, Dr. Murphy shifts the focus in her next workshop to the topic of Intra-Family Relationships: Blending Within the Family; Personal Space and Boundaries. Relationships between adults and children, as well as among children, the need for personal space, the issue of boundaries, and family and individual member differences will be discussed.

  • On January 9, 2007, Coping with Change will be presented. In a blended family, members are acclimating to changes in the presence of new family members, which may heighten feelings of vulnerability. Conflicts, inevitable in all families, may seem even more uncomfortable and difficult to resolve. Coping and conflict resolution strategies will be discussed.
Concluding the series on February 6, 2007, Dr. Murphy plans to cover the subject of Discipline: What Works? What Doesn't? Whose Job is it? Reaching an agreement on discipline is essential. Discussing what has and has not worked in the past for each parent is important to developing a joint plan by the parents.

All classes will be held at 148 Prospect Street, Ridgewood. Please call Marianne Bennett at 201-445-7015 x215 to register for PARENTING THE YOUNG CHILD classes or for further information. The cost of the four session series is $80. Single sessions are $25 each. You may also register online.
