(Paramus, NJ) June 22, 2011 – The New Jersey Alliance for Children, Youth and Families recently honored Sandra Sytsma-Johnson, a staff member of Children's Aid and Family Services. She was awarded "Clinician of the Year."
Ms. Sytsma-Johnson, a resident of Midland Park, NJ, is a clinical case manager for children in foster care. Ms. Sytsma-Johnson provides both individual and group therapy for the children. She also provides family therapy. She is an advocate in the family court system for the children concerning placement. Some of the children may be reunited with their birth families or placed with nurturing fosterfamilies.Ms. Sytsma-Johnson is dedicated to making these transitions successful for the children.
Ms. Systsma-Johnson recently completed a course in yoga and has been teaching the children how to express their emotions in a healthy way using movement and breathing techniques. Additionally, she implements "Therapeutic Teaching" strategies for her colleagues to enable them to teach children coping skills and set them up for success.
Ms. Systsma-Johnson's career began in the financial field. After volunteering for New City Kids in Jersey City, she returned to school to study social work. She earned her Master's in Social Work from New York University and joined Children's Aid and Family Services in 2007.
