(Paramus, NJ) October 6, 2010 – The Giants Foundation recently awarded $10,000 to Children's Aid and Family Services. This grant will be used for tutoring, SAT preparation and academic enrichment activities for foster children, many of whom have a history of six to 10 different school placements by the time they enter the agency's care. As a result, the vast majority of them are performing more than two years below grade level and in critical need of individual educational support.
The grant will also be used to provide support to the teenagers "aging out" of the agency's care and transitioning to independent living. It will provide care packages comprised of bedding, luggage, towels and other essential items needed to help these teens establish new residences, as well as laptop computers for the young adults attending college or vocational school.
"The Giants Foundation is helping the children and teenagers in the agency's care to build independent and productive futures," says Bob Jones, Ph.D., president & CEO of Children's Aid and Family Services. "Educational support is vital to helping the children succeed in school and eventually live independently in adulthood. The care packages and laptop computers are critical for the teenagers who are aging out of our care and generally have no family support during this transitional period into adulthood. I am extremely thankful to the Giants Foundation for this generous grant."
