(Paramus, NJ) April 26, 2010 – Leaving the childhood home and preparing to live independently can be even more challenging for adopted teenagers and their parents. This is often a time when feelings of separation and loss – often more prevalent in adopted young adults – can be easily reactivated. For instance, the need for more information on the birth family can become pressing. Parents may experience anxiety about their child's ability to manage on his or her own. To help adoptive families get through this challenging time, Children's Aid and Family Services is presenting "Leaving Home is Hard to Do: Preparing to launch your adopted child for college or work," at its Family and Adoption Services Center, 148 Prospect Street, Ridgewood, NJ. This free workshop is Thursday, May 20, 2010 from 7:30 – 9:30 p.m.
This workshop will address the special issues of leaving home for older adolescent and young adult adopted persons and their parents. It will be led by Barbara A. Rall, a longtime advocate for adoption services and former assistant director of the New Jersey Adoption Resource Clearing House.
