(Ridgewood, NJ) May 3, 2007 - A 55-year-old commuting 2 hours each way, 4 days a week to Rutger's University to earn her bachelors degree. A 73-year-old former Wall Street trader who now makes a living as a dollhouse maker. A man who overcame a speech disorder by joining a Toastmasters' Club and becoming an active public speaker. A dedicated volunteer who teaches computer skills to senior citizens at Children's Aid and Family Services' Northwest Senior Center, as well as to prisoners in the Bergen County jail. What do these four individuals have in common? They are all past recipients of Children's Aid and Family Services' Elise B. Schlivek "Help Realize a Dream" award.
The award was created by the late Louis (Bud) Schlivek and his sister, Isabelle Feher, as a memorial to their mother, Elise. It recognizes an individual 55 years of age or older who is engaged in the pursuit of realizing a dream, either life-long or more recent. The $1,000 prize is given annually to an individual who meets the criteria.
Maybe you know an inspiring individual who fits the criteria of the "Help Realize a Dream" award. They could be your neighbor, family friend, or relative. Perhaps you have an inspiring story of your own. If so, don't hesitate - nominations for the award, which will be announced in September, are being accepted through the end of August.
Candidates may be nominated by others or self-nominated. They should be 55 years of age or older, reside in - or have an affiliation with - one of the communities in northern New Jersey served by Children's Aid and Family Services, and be engaged in pursuing either a lifetime or more recent goal. This year's winner will be honored at the agency's annual Building Futures Award event on Tuesday, September 25, 2007. For a nomination form, please log on to www.cafsnj.org and click on the "Help Realize a Dream" nomination form link on the home page, or call Rita Ward at 201-261-2800 x 214.
