(Paramus, NJ) May 9, 2007 - "Isn't it a wonderful thing that we're all different? Each of us has strengths and skills to share. When we link our individual strengths together we're invincible. We can't imagine us without you." This was the uplifting message on pins shaped like puzzle pieces given to a group of extraordinary parents by Children's Aid and Family Services.
The agency recently celebrated National Foster Care Month with a celebratory dinner honoring foster parents, held in the beautiful Healing Garden at the agency's 148 Prospect Street office in Ridgewood, NJ.
The parents all participate in the agency's Treatment Homes program, which was designed to help vulnerable youngsters and teens receive therapeutic care under the guidance of specially trained foster parents. These parents receive extensive training to learn how to care for foster children with behavioral, emotional, and/or academic issues, and provide a safe environment for the child to learn the skills essential to healthy living.
The purpose of the dinner was to acknowledge the incredible contributions these foster parents make to the lives of the children in the agency's care. About 18 families attended the dinner, which also featured live music from the Richard Polatchek Jazz Trio. Additionally, several treatment foster families received gold Children's Aid and Family Services' pins in recognition of multiple years of service to the agency. Two families received a pin for 10 years of service; two families received a pin for 22 years of service, and one family received a pin for 17 years of service.
Finally, each family was given a goody bag containing perfume donated by Tiffany & Company, and other fun extras. According to the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, more than half a million children are in the U.S. foster care system, and 114,000 of them are available for adoption. Generally, once a child reaches the age of 9, he or she is considered "old" and it becomes increasingly difficult to find an adoptive home for him or her. To view the children in the agency's care who are waiting to be adopted, visit www.cafsnj.org to see heartwarming videos of the children talking about their favorite foods, things to do, and their simple desire to be part of a permanent, loving family.
"Being a foster parent is the greatest thing I've ever done," says Mya Martinez, foster mother of four boys ages 9, 10, 13, and 14. "I love my boys and can't imagine living without them; I truly believe that if you love a child enough you can make a positive impact on their life."
Training, case management, and financial assistance are several of the ongoing supportive services provided to treatment families, along with 24/7 emergency assistance. To find out more, please call Shannon Prescott at (201) 226-0300.
