The Gift of Health

Jacob came to Children's Aid and Family Services when he was just a toddler. He had suffered such horrendous abuse that he could not speak. He was too frightened to look anyone in the eye and kept his head down. He had high blood pressure and difficulty walking.

The traumatized toddler was placed with agency foster parents who are trained in caring for babies and toddlers with complex medical needs. They embraced Jacob, showering him with love and hugs. They kept reassuring Jacob that he was a wonderful little boy. They took him to medical appointments with a host of specialists. An agency therapist helped him heal from the trauma he endured.

The Gift of Family

Jeremy was 6-years-old when he was removed from his parents' home. They abused drugs; Jeremy suffered terrible abuse and neglect. He came to Children's Aid and Family Services and began living in one of our group homes for children in foster care.

Jeremy was very angry and had difficulty controlling his emotions. Although he was still a little boy himself, he was used to taking care of himself and his sisters. At the group home, he had difficulty accepting direction and guidance from the staff.

To help him learn to handle his emotions, stress and anger, Jeremy received individual and group therapies. He participated in yoga and basketball. Jeremy was also struggling in school, and the agency provided tutoring help for him. His grades began to improve and his confidence grew.

The Gift of Brothers and Sisters

13 children, all under the age of 12.

That’s the number of foster children Mary Reed cared for in one year. Most were brothers and sisters that are too often split up and live in different foster homes.

Being in foster care and away from home is hard enough for a child; being separated from a brother or sister can be devastating. Approximately 70 percent of children in foster care in the United States have another sibling in care.
